On May 9th, at the midpoint of the Saint John conference at our Annual General Meeting, I officially retired as the President of ACCES. The past 7 years have been a roller coaster of challenges and exciting triumphs, for the original foundation committee, and then the new Executive Board of the Society. I leave the post with a lifetime worth of great memories and a sense of tremendous accomplishment. We have created a healthy and vibrant organization where nothing existed before.

The International Certification Commission provides formal recognition for Clinical Engineering and Biomedical Technology. Certification as a Biomedical Engineering Technician or Technologist (CBET) demonstrates excellence in theoretical as well as practical knowledge of the principles of biomedical equipment technology and the underlying physiologic principle, and the practical, safe, clinical application of biomedical equipment. His/her capabilities may include installation, calibration, inspection, preventative maintenance, repair, modification, design and development of general biomedical and related technical equipment, and in equipment control, safety and maintenance. It also demonstrates a strong commitment to your professional career.

ACCES would like to salute the Biomedical and Clinical Engineering professionals of Atlantic Canada for their dedication and commitment to those we serve. As Healthcare Technology Professionals we provide valuable services to support the clinical demands of our Healthcare environments. To mark this important week ACCES has been distributing new standup banners to many biomedical departments in Atlantic Canada. The banners are 33 X 78 inches and come with sturdy aluminum stands. They make a great tool to display. It also describes our profession and the services we provide to our healthcare organizations.

The Health Association Nova Scotia (HANS) Clinical Engineering Service is pleased to announce we are now able to offer our Lift Load Mark III and accessories for sale to other CE groups. We have been developing the product for more than 3 years, in conjunction with Stantec Engineering and Quality Machining, and it is now a mature and professional platform and warrantied for a full year from time of delivery. We have 5 of these in service with our teams and have just shipped our first system and accessories to the Regina General Hospital.

ACCES was profiled in the October 2012 edition of TechNation with circulation of ~25,000. This profile article provides a good overview of our organization. TechNation is a US publication dedicated to Biomedical Engineering. It is a informative Biomed Publication with both a hardcopy and an online version of the magazine available.

Congratulations go to the Clinical Engineering Week 2012 contest winners;

We had several teams submit more than one picture, same poster some of the same people at different locations. While we applaud the effort and appreciate the additional pictures the judges decided in all fairness these should be considered one entry. In this way every team that participated got a prize, what could be more fair then that!
Each department will receive a $200 dollar cheque From ACCES In January of 2013 to be used for next year’s Clinical Engineering Week activities. Many thanks to those that participated. It is nice to see CE professionals proudly displaying their many contributions to healthcare and their achievements!

ACCES also ran a contest that was open to departments in Atlantic Canada. To enter the contest, departments sent us pictures with thier team beside a banner (encluding names!) suitable for publication on our website. The teams will be entered in a random draw for one of six prizes of $200. The $200 prizes will be sent to lucky winners in January of 2013 to help you fund and promote CE week next year!
The contest is now closed to any further entries.
Pictures submitted are shown below. If you do your math, you will see the chances of winning are very good, and involves little randomness.

To help prompt Clinical Engineering week ACCES ran a contest that was open to any group in Atlantic that used the free standing ACCES created banner during CE week. To enter the contest required a submission of a picture of your team beside the banner and thier names.

Health Technology Management, a new moniker for Biomedical and Clinical Engineering departments.
Admittedly, when I first ran across this acronym my thoughts where, “Great just what this field needs, another name”. If not being able to decide if we where Biomedical Departments or Clinical Engineering Departments wasn’t bad enough lets start calling our field something altogether different.
After attended a recent AAMI sponsored webinar HTM Leadership. I had to rethink the whole subject.

The cornerstone for ACCES was laid in November of 2006. We began with a meeting of interested CE professionals hosted in Moncton. This visionary group became the foundation team which launched regional discussions in 2006. These conversations evolved and grew through 2007. The 2008 spring conference in Newfoundland was followed by our incorporation as the Atlantic Canada Clinical Engineering Society in the late summer of 2008.

It’s official! ACCES17 / CMBES35 Joint Conference 2012 will take place in Halifax from June 19th to the 22nd. This will be a joint conference with the Canadian Medical and Biological Engineering Society and Atlantic Canada Clinical Engineering Society held at the Westin Hotel near Pier 21.
